Fresh Embryo Transfer

Fresh Embryo Transfer

Once the inseminated oocytes are fertilised, they are cultured in an incubator for a period of 2 to 5 days and 1- 3  of these embryos are transferred to the recipient’s uterus in the same cycle between  day 2 to day 5 which is called a fresh embryo transfer.

Pros and Cons of Fresh Cycles

Pros:

Fresh cycles have been used for decades in IVF treatment and have a long history of success. Another advantage is that, if you are successful with your first, fresh cycle you don’t have to go through the intensive hormone injection treatment again unless you want to have another child later on and use your frozen embryos.

In women who produced 14 eggs or fewer — fresh transfers led to better pregnancy and birth rates compared to those who received frozen embryos.

a fresh transfer  saves the additional waiting and having to take another cycle of hormones as in frozen cycle. Freezing also can lead to another one or two months of waiting and not knowing whether the procedure will be successful, which can be emotionally draining for patients.  The live-birth rate may not differ significantly between fresh-embryo transfer and frozen-embryo transfer cycles among ovulatory women with normal response to stimulation.

Cons : PCOS women and women who produce more than 15 eggs in a cycle are at high risk for developing ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome.
